“Why Me?” — When Favor Feels Heavy

By Pastor Clayton Hicks

This week at Resurgence Church, we leaned into a question many people quietly ask when life gets heavy:

“Why me?”

Why this pressure?
Why this responsibility?
Why this season?
Why this assignment?

Using the lives of Mary and Esther, we discovered something powerful:
God’s favor is not just about blessing—it’s about purpose.

Too often, we think favor means comfort, ease, or constant success. But in Scripture, favor usually shows up right before responsibility. Mary was highly favored, but that favor came with weight. Esther was positioned by God, but her position required courage and conflict.

And maybe that’s where many of us are right now.

We love the promise of favor… but we don’t always love the pressure attached to it.

Mary teaches us that favor has a function. God trusted her with something bigger than herself. Esther teaches us that conflict is necessary. The enemy resists what God is trying to accomplish through your life. But neither woman ran from the assignment. They leaned into God’s presence even when they didn’t have all the answers.

That’s the challenge for all of us.

Maybe the season you’re in is not punishment—it’s preparation.
Maybe the pressure isn’t proof God left you—it’s proof God trusts you.
Maybe the very thing making you ask “Why me?” is the thing God will use to reveal purpose in your life.

One of the strongest truths from this message is this:

“You’re not being picked on… you’re being prepared.”

Some of us have survived seasons we never thought we’d make it through. Others are carrying responsibilities that feel overwhelming. Some are standing in difficult family situations, difficult workplaces, or difficult spiritual battles.

But the same God who called Mary…
The same God who strengthened Esther…
Is still empowering His people today.

And the beautiful ending to the message is this:
what God places in you is bigger than the moment you’re in.

There’s purpose in your bloodline now because of Jesus Christ. Through His sacrifice, we’ve been invited into a new identity, a new future, and a new promise. The question shifts from “Why me?” to:

“Why not me?”

Why not trust God?
Why not step into purpose?
Why not believe God can use your life?

You were built for this season.
You were prepared for this moment.
And God’s favor on your life has a function.
