Text: Acts 2:42–47 (NIV)
A Picture Worth Living Into
Have you ever been part of something so good you couldn’t wait to get back—where people laughed, prayed, shared stories, and truly looked out for one another? That’s the picture Acts 2 paints of the very first church. It wasn’t just a Sunday event; it was a Spirit-filled family whose love changed their city.
We’ve been in our I Love My Church series—”Everybody Knows My Name,” “I’m in a Bad Spot,” “God Is Moving Me,” and “We’re Building Something.” As we close the series, here’s the challenge: if we really love our church, it will show. It will show in our devotion, our generosity, and our commitment to grow together.
Big Idea:
Because I love my church, I play my part.
1) Love Shows Up in Devotion (Acts 2:42–43)
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer… and everyone was filled with awe…”
The early church wasn’t casual—they were devoted. Devotion isn’t a feeling; devotion is a decision.
Devotion is a decision to:
- Seek God daily (Matthew 6:33)
- Worship through the storm (Acts 16:25)
- Trust His Word above all (Psalm 119:105)
- Pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
- Obey even when it costs (Luke 9:23)
- Stand firm in faith (1 Corinthians 15:58)
- Love Christ more than comfort (Philippians 3:8)
Analogy: Thermometer vs. Thermostat
A thermometer reacts to the room; a thermostat sets the room. Devotion is thermostat faith. Like Paul and Silas singing in prison at midnight, devotion sets an atmosphere of worship no matter the weather of life. When you set the climate of your heart toward Jesus, your home, workplace, and church begin to shift too.
Prayer to Try Today:
“Lord, I choose devotion. Make me a thermostat—set my heart on You.”
2) Love Shows Up in Generosity (Acts 2:44–45)
“All the believers were together… They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.”
Spirit-led people become open-handed people. In Acts 2, everybody participated—pastors, leaders, and everyday believers.
At Resurgence, we talk about three lanes of generosity:
Time. You can’t get time back, and that’s why offering it to God matters. Showing up to worship, to pray, to serve—this says, “Jesus, You’re first.”
Talent. God gave you gifts on purpose. Teach, encourage, create, organize—bring it to the table and watch God multiply it.
Tithe. Tithing isn’t about what God takes from us; it’s about what He forms in us—dependence, obedience, and love for His mission.
Analogy: Fans vs. Players
Fans cheer when it’s convenient. Players show up early, sweat, learn the playbook, and do what helps the team win. Church isn’t a stadium for spectators—it’s a field for participants. The blessing is not in spectating; the blessing is in participation.
A simple picture: Be a pipeline, not a pool. Let God’s blessing flow through you to others, and you’ll never run dry.
3) Love Shows Up in Growth (Acts 2:46–47)
“Every day they continued to meet… They broke bread in their homes… praising God… and the Lord added to their number daily…”
Healthy things grow. The early church grew—not because of clever strategy alone—but because God breathed on a devoted, generous community.
Three keys to growth:
- Consistency. Not convenience—commitment. Show up in worship, prayer, giving, and serving, and watch God show up in power.
- Community. They ate together and shared life. People don’t just need a service; they need a spiritual family.
- Celebration. Joy is contagious. A worshipping church becomes a welcoming church.
Analogy: How Fire Spreads
One small flame doesn’t look like much—until it catches. When a church burns with devotion, generosity, and invitation, that fire spreads—families are warmed, hearts are lit, and a city can feel the heat of God’s love.
Put Love into Action: Play Your Part
Imagine what happens if each of us decides:
- Serve faithfully in at least one area.
- Give consistently to fuel the vision.
- Invite boldly so others can meet Jesus.
I believe:
- Needs will be met.
- Outreach will multiply.
- Our city will take notice—and the Lord will add to our number those who are being saved.
Confession:
I will be devoted. I will be generous. And my church will grow.
Reflection Questions for Your Week
- Where do I need to move from thermometer to thermostat in my faith right now?
- Which lane of generosity (time, talent, tithe) is God asking me to grow in this month?
- Who can I invite to sit with me at Resurgence this Sunday?
- What consistent habit will help me build real community (a group, a serve team, a weekly meal with church family)?
A Simple Prayer
“Lord, thank You for Resurgence—for every person, every gift, every story of Your faithfulness. Today I choose devotion. Make me generous with my time, talent, and tithe. Use my life to help this church grow in health and in impact. Add to our number daily those who are being saved. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
