Plugged In: Thoughts to Build Your Faith — by Pastor Clayton J. Hicks

Text: Genesis 22:1–18 (NLT)
Big Idea: Faith becomes real when what you love most collides with what God asks for—and you still say yes.

A Movie, a Moment, and a Mirror

Some films entertain you; John Q exposes you. You watch a father hit a wall and decide, “Whatever it takes, my boy is going to live.” It’s desperation on display—love that refuses to let go.

Genesis 22 shows us something even deeper. Abraham isn’t driven by panic; he’s driven by obedience. The God who gave Isaac now asks for Isaac—and Abraham still says yes. That’s not reckless. That’s reverent. That’s a faith that moves even when the map makes no sense.

“God may feel silent, but He’s never absent. His silence is often strength-training for your faith.”

1) God Responds

Before there was a test, there was a track record. God called Abram out—God responded with promise. God renamed him—God responded with covenant. God promised a son—God responded with Isaac.

That’s our story too. You prayed for wisdom—He answered. You tithed in a lean season—He provided. Sometimes the response was “yes,” sometimes “wait,” sometimes “forgive,” but God responded.

The pattern we see: God tells → Abraham obeys → God responds.
Obedience doesn’t earn grace; it positions us under it.

2) A Good Judge of Character

God wasn’t trying to hurt Abraham—He was healing Abraham’s tendency to take matters into his own hands. Tests reveal whether we’ve made an idol out of the last prayer God answered.

Salvation happens in a moment; sanctification reshapes us over a lifetime.

If God said “no” today, would your worship change? Character will always be tested before calling is confirmed.

3) Moving by Faith: Leaps and Steps

Abraham models both:

Leap: “Here I am.” Early morning obedience without a blueprint. (v.3)
Step: “Abraham looked up and saw the place.” (v.4) He keeps walking.

Leap: “We will worship… and we will come right back.” (v.5) Declaration before manifestation.
Step: “God will provide… my son.” (v.8) Steady confession while climbing.

Sometimes you can’t bring the whole crowd up the mountain.
Sometimes you can’t even explain it to Isaac yet.
Just keep moving.

4) God Provides

Knife raised. Heaven interrupts. Ram in the thicket.
Name of the place: Yahweh-Yireh — The Lord will provide.

When love drives the story and obedience moves your feet, provision meets you on the mountain, not at the bottom of it.

And God doesn’t stop at enough—He speaks multiplication: stars, sand, nations blessed “because you obeyed.” (vv.16–18)

The Gospel in One Scene

Abraham’s hand was stopped. The Father’s hand was not. Jesus became the Lamb for us.

So today isn’t about proving your worth; it’s about surrendering your yes. Lay down your Isaac—your control, your timeline, your fear—and pick up trust.

Prayer

“Lord, I don’t understand it all, but I trust You through it all. Whatever it takes, my answer is yes.”
