Love Matters: It’s More Than a Feeling

We use the word love all the time.

“I love this song.”
“I love this food.”
“I love this show.”
“I love you.”

But if we’re honest, sometimes what we call love is really just how something makes us feel in the moment.

Because love feels good—until it doesn’t.
Love is easy—until it costs you something.
Love sounds right—until obedience gets involved.

That’s why this series is called Love Matters.

Love isn’t just something you feel.
Love is something you choose.
Love isn’t just what you say.
Love is what you do.

And when love is real—it has weight.

Today, we start at the foundation: loving God.
Not loving God when it’s convenient.
Not loving God when things are going our way.
But loving God when it requires trust, surrender, and obedience.

Because loving God—real love—is more than a feeling.

To help us see that clearly, Scripture brings us face-to-face with Samson—a man who was strong on the outside but struggled with where, and with whom, he gave his love.

It’s More Than a Feeling

Before Samson ever lifted a jawbone or tore apart a lion, his story started with two faithful parents.

They were barren.
They were oppressed.
They were overlooked.

Yet they chose to love God anyway.

God gave Samson a calling before he ever took a breath—and that calling came with boundaries. As a Nazirite, Samson was set apart. No wine. No unclean things. No razor to his head.

Here’s the truth we can’t miss: God’s choice was clear—but their love for God was still a decision.

Faithfulness isn’t emotional.
Faithfulness is what you choose when your environment doesn’t give you a reason to.

You can be surrounded by chaos and still choose God.
You can be in a cold season and still trust Him.
You can feel barren, delayed, or stuck—and still stay faithful.

Don’t let a cold season convince you that God stopped working.

Scripture makes it plain:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.”
“If you love Me, keep My commands.”

Love shows up in obedience.

I didn’t shovel snow this past week because I felt like it—I did it because it was the right decision for my family. Love works the same way.

When Feelings Start Leading

Samson knew what to do—but didn’t do it.

He went places he shouldn’t have gone.
He touched what he was told to avoid.
He entertained what was meant to stay at a distance.

The first wrong turn never looks dangerous—but it always leads somewhere you never intended to go.

Samson’s problem wasn’t strength.
It was direction.

And if we’re honest, sometimes we’re Samson.

We feel God in worship.
We feel Him when things go our way.
But when feelings fade, we start choosing comfort over calling.

God’s grace is not permission to drift—it’s power to return.

When love gets disordered, vision gets blurry. And before long, we start mistaking counterfeit affection for real love.

Which brings us to the hard truth:

Love Ain’t Blind—It’s Just Me

Samson didn’t lose his strength overnight.
He lost it through repeated, unchecked decisions.

The enemy didn’t need force—he just needed Samson to volunteer what was sacred.

And we do the same.

We stay in relationships we know aren’t right.
We chase money at the expense of family.
We keep clicking, posting, arguing, indulging—knowing better.

It’s not love that blinds us.
It’s our will.
Our desires.
Our refusal to deal with our stuff.

But here’s the mercy in the story.

Samson lost his eyes—but not his calling.
He lost his freedom—but not his purpose.
He was corrected—but not destroyed.

Sometimes it’s not favor that proves God loves you—it’s mercy.

Let’s Stay Together

Samson’s hair grew back.

That detail matters.

It means God wasn’t finished.

Blind, broken, and humbled—Samson prayed again. Not with pride. Not with excuses. But with honesty.

“God, remember me.”

And that prayer changed everything.

What looked like the end was God repositioning him for fulfillment.

Samson learned what we all must learn:
Every other ground is sinking sand.

So the decision becomes simple.

God, I’m staying with You.
Even when it costs me.
Even when it hurts.
Even when correction comes before blessing.

Because Your love matters.

And after mercy shows up—don’t waste it by walking away.
